Settling into Indonesia’s unfamiliar cultural environment requires more than simply acquiring language skills. It involves making many adjustments, some of which can prove very difficult without the advice of a native Indonesian.
With this in mind, we invite all clients to use LSI as a resource for information and advice. Our staff is comprised largely of native Indonesians who are more than familiar with their country. And, given their employment at a Bahasa Indonesia language school, they are well acquainted with those aspects of the culture which prove most difficult for expatriate residents.
Your language tutor will likely be able to advise you on many day-to-day issues, such as where to find a particular sort of shopping district, say to purchase local foods, antiques or batik textiles. For suggestions on larger issues, such as national and international schools for your children or places of worship for you and your family, you may wish to call the LSI office directly. LSI’s administrative staff can be most helpful with such concerns.
Our tutors and office staff can also familiarise you with outlets for cultural enrichment. If you would like to learn traditional dance, gamelan, batik painting or Indonesian cooking, we have some leads. We can tell you about the restaurants, cafés, and Sunday brunch spots we enjoy. We can provide an overview of the city’s museums and its many cultural venues – for exhibitions, film screenings, lectures, and performances (popular, classical, and traditional Indonesian). And we are always ready to share with you our travel experiences throughout the archipelago.
